My Teaching and Learning Metaphor
Establishing human contact and building relationships with your students is the essence of teaching and learning in my opinion. Having a positive and significant impact on children’s lives in their early years is the basis of my values and beliefs. It is for this reason that I believe teaching is like being a Barista.
Anyone who loves coffee will understand and appreciate the importance of a good barista. They are the first person you connect with in the morning and you depend on them to set you up for the day; make you that coffee that will help you start the day on the right foot. Teachers also have this relationship with their students. After their parents we are probably the next adult they have most contact with. We encounter them in their early years, the most important stage of development. It is our responsibility to prepare them for the rest of their lives. We must do this cognitively, socially, physically and emotionally.
First-rate baristas will know their customers inside out. They understand their customers’ needs and wants; whether they prefer a latte or espresso, to-go cup or sit-in, extra milk or piping hot? As teachers, understanding our students’ needs is the first step to effective teaching and learning. We should know our students’ learning styles, their strengths and needs, their likes and interests.
I truly believe that going the extra mile is one of the fundamental elements of building a positive relationship with your students. Once they realize that you care, they will trust and respect you. Providing your students with opportunities to exceed their full potential will be a more enjoyable process once a positive trusting relationship is established.
Perhaps your relationship with your barista is not that important in your life, but for coffee lovers it could be! And don’t forget, Baristas always greet you with a SMILE!
